Lemon & Citrus Essential Oils: Mood, Immunity & Household Uses

Fresh lemon peel

Lemon and other citrus essential oils (orange, grapefruit, bergamot, lime) occupy a unique place in aromatherapy — they are the most accessible, universally pleasant, and among the most research-supported oils for mood and emotional wellbeing. Cold-pressed lemon oil, extracted from the rinds of Citrus limonum, is composed of up to 70% d-limonene, a monoterpene with a well-established safety profile and a growing body of research supporting its physiological and psychological effects.

Several studies support lemon oil's anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects. A study published in Behavioural Brain Research found that lemon oil vapor significantly elevated serotonin and dopamine turnover in animal models, producing effects comparable to pharmaceutical interventions in certain behavioral tests. Human studies have confirmed uplift in mood and reduction in anxiety scores following lemon oil inhalation, with effects measurable within minutes of exposure. Beyond emotional health, d-limonene has been extensively studied as a solvent-class antimicrobial agent, making citrus oils practical additions to DIY household cleaning formulas.

Critical safety note: cold-pressed citrus oils are phototoxic due to their furanocoumarin content (primarily bergapten in some varieties and limonene oxidation products). Do not apply cold-pressed lemon oil to skin that will be exposed to sunlight or UV light within 18 hours. Steam-distilled lemon oil is non-phototoxic and appropriate for leave-on skin applications. For diffusion and ambient aromatherapy, both forms are equally safe and effective.
