Eucalyptus Essential Oil: Respiratory, Cognitive & Antimicrobial Benefits
Eucalyptus globulus / radiata
Eucalyptus essential oil is one of the most pharmacologically active oils in aromatherapy, with its dominant constituent 1,8-cineole (also called eucalyptol) comprising 60–90% of the oil and driving most of its documented therapeutic effects. It has been used in Western medicine since the 1880s and remains an active ingredient in over-the-counter respiratory preparations, topical analgesics, and oral hygiene products.
The respiratory benefits of eucalyptus are among its most well-documented properties. 1,8-cineole is a mucolytic agent — it helps thin and loosen mucus — and has demonstrated bronchodilatory effects in clinical studies. Research published in Respiratory Medicine found that Eucalyptus globulus inhalation measurably improved airflow in participants with respiratory conditions. The compound also inhibits the NF-κB signaling pathway, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production relevant to upper respiratory infections. Separate research has found that eucalyptus essential oil exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against pathogens including S. aureus, E. coli, and influenza virus.
For cognitive applications, 1,8-cineole has demonstrated acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity — the same mechanism targeted by certain Alzheimer's medications — and a 2016 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that eucalyptus aroma improved sustained attention and working memory. Important safety note: do not use eucalyptus oil on or near the face of children under six, as 1,8-cineole can trigger respiratory distress in young children.
